Meet Your Soul Doula and Midwife

Imani Sankofa

I’m Imani Sankofa, a Soul Doula and Midwife with over 20 years of experience. I’m also an ordained priestess and a self-study of death, dying, and bereavement.

My entry into this field began with the terminal prognosis of my youngest daughter in 2003. Since then, I have helped create end-of-life plans and have kept vigil for others, both adult and child, in the home, in hospital, and long-term care. I have also provided after-death care support for the remaining family after their loved ones made the transition.
The way forward...

My mission is to assist you in planning for a good death and that involves discussion - sometimes, lots of discussion. My intentions for our time together are:

  • To support your right to self-determination
  • To help you normalize conversations about death, dying and grief
  • To encourage you to become informed before making decisions

What is a Soul Doula and Midwife?

Soul Doula and Midwife, also known as an end-of-life doula or death doula, is a non-medical practitioner who provides spiritual, emotional, and physical support for dying people and their caregivers.

What do Soul Doulas and Midwives do?

Soul Doulas and Midwives approach their work with clarity, an open heart, and an open mind. They offer companionship, comfort, and guidance to individuals facing a terminal prognosis or death during their end-of-life journey. They help people celebrate their lives and transition peacefully while providing compassionate support to the client's family.

Soul Doulas and Midwives provide valuable support and compassion by sitting quietly with clients and holding their hands through difficult times. They also assist with legacy projects and advance care planning, ensuring that clients feel understood and cared for as they make meaningful choices.

Soul Doulas and Midwives create a sacred space by cleansing and blessing the room with incense. They may also set the ambiance with crystals, singing bowls, fruit offerings, and flowers.

Soul Doulas and Midwives provide encouragement and comfort while they sit and hold the client’s hand. They may also pray with the client as requested.

Soul Doulas and Midwives use their spiritual training to shift and refocus energy, helping the client release when they are ready to leave their body. At the client’s request, they use sacred oils or herbs mixed with water to bless the client’s body before and after the transition.

Do I need to be actively dying to utilize your Soul Doula services?

No. If you are dealing with anxiety associated with death, want to start planning your own passing early, or have some other desire to discuss death and dying, we're happy to speak with you.

Are Doula services offered remotely?

Yes. Some services can be offered virtually via video, phone, or by computer.

At what point do I hire a Soul Doula and Midwife?

Soul Doulas and Midwives are available through all stages of the end-of-life process, from notice of terminal diagnosis through active dying and death. Once you reach a point in your disease where nothing more can be done for a terminal illness, or you decide to forego additional curative treatments, soul doulas offer a comprehensive approach to give you the best life possible from that point forward.

BE PROACTIVE

Why wait until the end? You can plan for the end of life before reaching the final stage. Engage in estate planning services to make medical decisions while you are still in control. You can even have a living funeral to enjoy time with your loved ones and celebrate your life before you pass away.

How can I book a session with you?

You can book an Introductory Session with our Soul Doula by scheduling a 30-minute Clarity Chat or by emailing us directly at info@mysoulguide.net

What happens after I hire you?

Our first session after the initial consultation will be centered on drawing up our end-of-life plan. Based on our initial consultation, our doulas will arrive with an agenda to guide this process. We will create a "road map" to guide us through the dying person's journey. The plan will lay the groundwork that will help alleviate logistical and emotional stress during the transition. Our follow-up interactions with you will largely dictate what we want in the end-of-life plan.

Depending on the individual, we may discuss:

  • Specific areas where closure is desired
  • Pain/symptom management
  • Visitor management
  • Funeral planning
  • Body disposition
  • Assistance with legacy projects
